Seagate vs. Samsung ‘Do you think the HDD is really dead?’

Seagate, No. 1 HDD manufacturer in the world, made a strong counter-argument against Samsung Electronics in the CE strategy forum held in Intercontinental Hotel last October 6th by claiming that it would be impossible to release 500GB flash memory until cars would fly in the sky. Previously, Chang Kyu Whang, CEO of Samsung Electronics, declared that flash memory would dominate the storage market soon last September 13th.

Rob Pait, the executive of global CE marketing of Seagate, said that since users already have various pipe lines (media) to access to digital contents, it is of no use if they don’t have a tank to store even if there is excellent pipe line such as internet, satellite and so on.

He added that as users want high quality contents such as 3D navigation, music files, and contents through Wi-fi more, demand for mass storage would be increasing also. And Seagate is currently providing various HDD products appropriate to the preference of customers.

Seagate interpreted that Samsung’s argument is mainly about 1-inch HDD widely used in portable devices. But Seagate said that even that 1-inch HDD would not die due to the increasing demand of storing DMB contents in cell phone and high quality music files in MP3Ps.

Meanwhile, when asked whether Seagate has any financial difficulty after Apple released iPod flash memory products, Seagate denied. They said that it is willing to provide its products if Apple decide to make 1-inch HDD device.
