◼ Kakaocomerce joins the fight against climate change on June 5th, World Environment Day

- Climate action includes voluntary carbon emissions reduction, development of environmentally-friendly products, improvements in packaging and development of forest lands

◼ Kakaocommerce is expected to take measures to promote environmentally-friendly products when giving gifts and shopping going forward

On the 4th of this month, Kakaocommerce announced that it will take part in climate action celebrating World Environment Day which takes place on June 5th.

Kakaocommerce defines climate action as a heat-warming gift for people the planet and it is planning to lay the groundwork to practice corporate social responsibility and sustainable management through various activities.

Kakaocommerce donates its financial resources to tackle environmental issues in Korea with the main items being voluntary carbon emissions reduction, development of environmentally-friendly products and packaging and participation in forest development projects. Also, it will apply environmentally-friendly components across the commerce services.

◼︎ Kakaocommerce received a certificate of ISO 14064-1 from Korean Standards Association and took part in international environment initiatives

Kakaocommerce implemented a voluntary greenhouse gases inventory to control greenhouse gases and reduce carbon emissions. To that end, it estimated the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from the Kakaocommerce campus and wrote a greenhouse gases inventory report which gained credibility from Korean Standards Association through third-party verification.

In addition, Kakaocommerce took part in “Climate Neutral Now,” a carbon-neutral initiative carried out by the UNFCCC.

◼︎ Taking the next step as an environmentally-friendly e-commerce business through introducing environmentally-friendly products and packaging

Also, starting from switching to environmentally-friendly products and packaging, Kakaocommerce would expand environmentally-friendly products introduced through gifts, shopping and makers which are run by Kakaocommerce.

The products of Kakaofriends will be incrementally switched to environmentally-friendly packaging boxes, packing and buffer material from June. Packing boxes will be made of paper certified by Forest Stewardship Council and packing, buffer material and vinyl tape will be switched to vinyl subsidiary materials and paper tape

In July, all packaging and subsidiary material will be switched to environmentally-friendly material for products used in Kakaofriends’ online mall. Therefore, 32 tons of carbon dioxide emissions are expected to decrease which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by 5,000 30-year-old mature pine trees.

Moreover, it would set up space to exhibit products that are environmentally-friendly certified or produced with environment protection in mind through giving gifts and shopping and it would provide support for small and medium sized merchandisers to produce environmentally-friendly products.

◼︎ Kakaocommerce takes part in a natural ecosystem restoration project

And Kakaocommerce will participate in a natural ecosystem restoration project including creating forests in local communities.

Forest creation is one of the most effective ways to respond to climate change being one of “nature-based solutions,” through which Kakaocommerce will contribute to creating carbon-neutral society and tackling climate change.

In May, Kakaocommerce created “Kakaocommerce Songpa hiking course” by planting 10,000 trees in Munjeong-dong, Seoul. Kakaocommerce is coming up with various activities to create forests and it would constantly think of ways to reduce fine dust and carbon emissions.

Furthermore, Kakaomakers is making efforts to restore natural ecosystems by introducing environmentally-friendly products such as “makers prime,” its environmentally-friendly private brand. Good examples are “less water denim,” which saves 80% of water compared to a typical denim and “eco-nylon pants” which is produced by recycling by-products of nylon.

An official from Kakaocommerce said,“as Kakaocommerce has grown thanks to the support by consumers and society at large, we are planning to come up with various activities in order to give back to society.
