Nujira to demonstrate world's most efficient 4G handset transmitter

BARCELONA, Spain (AVING Special Report on 'MWC 2010') -- <Visual News> Nujira is to demonstrate the world's most efficient and cost-effective RF power amplifier for 3G/4G at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, February 15-18. The demonstration is based on Coolteq.L silicon, which is being announced at MWC.

Nujira will be supplying its Coolteq.L test silicon to top global handset OEMs, PA (Power Amplifier) manufacturers and chipset platform vendors as a development platform and proof of concept. These partners will then be offered the opportunity to integrate Coolteq.L IP (Intellectual Property) into platform ICs or PA modules, allowing them to deliver best in class RF transmission efficiency without the need to add a separate power modulator chip in the highly constrained handset environment. Coolteq.L can double the efficiency of the handset PA, and halve the peak current requirement which is a major constraint for 4G handsets and USB dongles. A top five handset OEM has already signed a purchase agreement for the Coolteq.L development platform, and the company is in talks with other major OEMs and basedband and PA chip manufacturers.

According to Tim Haynes, CEO of Nujira, "Coolteq.L reduces bill-of-material cost and increases battery life for 3G, HSPA, 4G LTE and WiMAX terminals, directly addressing the two biggest challenges that developers face. Our test silicon implementation allows ecosystem partners to evaluate the technology and to independently validate our efficiency claims before integrating it into their own devices."

Nujira Coolteq.L can double the battery life of a 4G terminal RF front end compared with technologies in common use today. Coolteq.L is the only self-linearising wideband power optimization technology for handset RF front ends, enabling a smaller, cheaper PA device to be used and delivering high levels of efficiency using a single PA over three to five times the bandwidth of a standard design. As a result, Coolteq.L can be used as a basis for a highly linear front end covering all of the twenty-three different frequency bands defined by 3GPP for LTE and all of the operating modes (GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSUPA and LTE) at the full 20 MHz signal bandwidth, using only two PAs. Without Nujira's solution seven or more PAs would normally be required.

Nujira test results using the new silicon show that a handset PA with Coolteq.L is twice as efficient during HSUPA and LTE transmissions, and 1.5 times as efficient during W-CDMA transmissions, compared with the same PA without Coolteq. More importantly, the peak current requirement during transmit is significantly reduced, enabling current-limited applications such as USB dongles to transmit at the full rated power, enabling 4G mobile broadband users to benefit from higher data rates, greatest coverage, and longer battery life.

Nujira has achieved efficiencies of over 60% for an 880MHz LTE infrastructure Power Amplifier, based on its commercially available Coolteq.h power modulator, and is quoting typical efficiencies of 50% for a 'real life' handset situation. These are the highest efficiencies ever achieved for an LTE signal.
