Fraunhofer ISS displayed their MPEG-H Audio and Fraunhofer Cingo through ATSC 3.0 Demodulator and VR devices in KOBA 2016, held in Coex Hall A, C and D from May 24th (Tue) to 27th (Fri).
The MPEG-H Audio provides an immersive experience with its advanced audio technology, and has many presets to adjust the audio to fit the user's needs.
In their demonstration of ATSC 3.0 Demodulator, the user could easily go into the ambiance preset to select a language of the program, which currently supports German and English to adjust the balance between the narration and the background noises. A general application of this technology could be in a sports program, where a user who doesn't want to hear the narrator could adjust the ambiance to watch the show, sans audio.
The MPEG-H audio system supports not only home theaters, but also smartphones, tablets, to VR headsets. Fraunhofer aims to uphold the MPEG-H Audio system to set a new standard for universal spatial and 3D Audio coding with its affordable price and with its integration to consumer electronic products.
With its HOA (Higher Order Ambisonics), Fraunhofer aims to utilize MPEG-H Audio in sports, concert, or live shows, which need an immersive experience.
Fraunhofer's engineering is also used in Fraunhofer Cingo, which is specifically for the VR (Virtual Reality). Cingo not only projects a 3D sound on the VR device, but also takes an account of head movement, thus fully immersing the user in the VR experience. Through audio channels like 5.1 + 2H, 7.1 + 4H, Ambisonics B-format, Cingo delivers the full VR experience complete with its audio technology. For mobile entertainment, main producers such as Google, Samsung, and LG is integrating Cingo in their product (i.e. Google Nexus series, Samsung Gear VR, LG 360 VR, etc).
Meanwhile, KOBA 2016 is hosted by KOREA E & EX and The Korea Broadcasting Engineers & Technicians Association, aiming to advance and improve Korean broadcasting culture, video, audio and light industry. World Media Forum, International Conference and Technology Seminar, and other various broadcasting equipment events will also take place at the same time.
