TROSSINGEN, Germany (AVING Special Report on 'World Calss Brand in Germany - HOHNER') -- <Visual News> Trossingen is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, which can be reached in about four hours by train form Frankfurt am Main, and lies between Stuttgart and Zurich, Switzerland. Although only around 15,000 people live here, Trossingen is renowned as a ‘music town’.
Trossingen without Hohner is simply unthinkable. Hohner has now been making musical instruments in Trossingen for 150 years. Founded in 1857 by Matthias Hohner, the company is identified especially with harmonicas and accordions well known all over the world.
In the Hohner factory in Trossingen, most harmonicas and accordions are hand-made with German know how, using the original German machines. It is very impressed that a worker of tuning department has worked for more than forty years and that every reed passes through him to be tuned by hand.

In 1857, Matthias Hohner, a clockmaker at age 24, started manufacturing harmonicas in Trossingen with his wife and one employee. He went on to produce many other instruments and open subsidiary offices all over the world including the US in 1900 in NY. Since then the company has gone on to produce accordions, drums, other instruments and distribute many products throughout Germany and the US.
Hohner later added recorder and melodica manufacturing to its line of top-quality instruments. During the 1960s and 1970s the company manufactured a range of innovative and popular electromechanical keyboard instruments.
The roots of the Hohner firm are in Trossingen. Now the company also makes kazoos, recorder flutes, melodicas, guitars and bass guitars, along with its one million harmonicas a year, holding steady with 85% of harmonica market.
