- Ambidex evolving to learn even the delicate power control ability of humans to become "the first Korean robot technology to implement 'motor intelligence' to lead the world"

- Around D, a delivery-specialized indoor autonomous robot that moves with Naver Cloud, is also released... Roaming around Company Building 2

At the 2020 Global Machine Technology Forum hosted by Korea Institute of Machinery & MaterialsKIMM, Naver Labs revealed the results of advanced robot technology research achievements that enable learning even human motor intelligence.

On this day, the forum was set up with world-class robot experts to view various robot technologies that will lead to changes in daily life amid the spread of COVID-19. Naver Labs CEO Seok Sang-ok spoke at the event, unveiling a new version of the robotic arm Ambidex, that took a step forward in software and hardware and a new version of the indoor autonomous robot platform "Around."

Ambidex, the device that first demonstrated "motor intelligence," even learning "force control" according to delicate muscle movements.

And, also the external evolution... one more step from a robot arm to a robot equipped with a waist and hand

The highlight of the presentation is "Ambidex" continuing the evolvement. The biggest change is the learning ability which enables learning even the complex and unstructured movements of humans by converting them to data, having the so-called "motor intelligence." CEO Seok Sang-ok said, "It was the first case of actual demonstration of "motor intelligence (Reference 1)" which was a big challenge. I think Korea's robotic technology could be the starting point to advance global robot research to the next level."

For this, Naver Labs developed the Ambidex-exclusive haptic device to extract the delicate force control ability of humans in the form of data that a robot can learn (Reference 2). With this exclusive haptic device sized the same as humans with ▲7 degrees of freedom like a human arm ▲Bilateral teleoperation that delivers force in both directions to a person and a robot, careful force/position control data is recognized from the demo motion (motion) directly performed by a person, and then used as learning data for the robot.

He added, "The method of learning a robot with haptic devices and reinforcement learning is so accurate and efficient that even with a single demonstration, the robot can perform tasks that fit its intention without human intervention." The newly released Ambidex has a waist part to further expand the working radius, and the object can be recognized with the sensor head. Also, the robot hand "BLT Gripper (Reference 4)" that can change the method in various ways was installed.

"D," series 4 of the indoor autonomous robot AROUND optimized for delivery unveiled... "Will roam around Company Building 2"

CEO Seok unveiled "Around D" the fourth model of the autonomous robot Around series specialized for delivery. It can perform natural autonomous driving based on vision technology and reinforcement learning without the need for the expensive LiDAR sensor like the older models, and with the "Gaze" interface applied in the previous model Around C, robots can interact intuitively with humans during movement and service through the interface.

CEO Seok said, "Around D was also made with the brainless robot technology in which Naver Cloud replaces the robot's brain, and it will be one of the robots that will be used in Naver's second company building currently under construction as a robot-friendly building. With great scalability that adds diverse service application to the existing platform with the HW/SW called Around Zero, we should be able to showcase more variety of ser robots in near future."

Lastly, CEO Seok ended his presentation by saying, "Naver's robot research begins with high-precision map research on indoor, outdoor and road spaces that will provide actual services while robots move, and it has reached the point of developing cloud-based robot control system and even the task-learning tool that learns motion intelligence of humans. For robots that are receiving more attention in the untact era to enter the everyday spaces, more research is needed on the environment surrounding the robots and humans, the subject of coexistence."

On November 25 to 27, Naver will be sharing the technology that sustains the "connection" among SME-creator-user in the untact era and research experiences on futuristic and advanced technologies that will be implemented in Company Building 2 currently under construction at Korea's largest development conference DEVIEW 2020.

Naver is based in Pangyo, Pangyo Technovalley is the Asia Tech Hub where more than 1,200 companies in IT, CT, and BT sectors with innovative products and technologies are gathered. Located just south of the Seoul metropolitan area, easy transportation access and infrastructure provides the best environment for Korean companies to conduct businesses.

Various high-tech companies are located here, with more than 64 thousand full-time workers with a vast majority in their 20s and 30s. By industries, companies in the high-tech industry are made up of IT companies, content technology companies, biotechnology companies, and nanotechnology companies.
