Genoplan Korea, a company that analyzes genetic information of individuals and studies collective genomics, participated in MIK HOT SPOT (Made in Korea Online Exhibition) KHIDI. AVING News met the CEO of Genoplan Korea Kang Byeong-gyu for an interview.
Please introduce your company briefly.
Genoplan is a DTC gene analysis company
founded in 2014. DTC stands for Direct to Consumer, which means that the
consumer requests genetic analysis directly from a private company without
going through a medical institution. The goal of Genoplan is to help consumers
know, and manage and prevent genetically vulnerable properties in advance. We
strive to create a world where anyone can easily access genetic analysis and
utilize their genetic information.
Please introduce your main products and systems.
We analyze genetic information of
individuals. This way, individuals do not have to go to medical institutions.
They can just send their salivas in the container and send it to us. We then
extract DNA from the saliva and analyze various genetic information from the
extracted DNA, and deliver the results to our customers. By using our system,
customers don't have get their blood drawn from the hospitals. They can perform
genetic analysis easily and simply from the saliva.
And, we are providing various genetic
information including the risk for various diseases, sensitivity to drugs,
physical characteristics, wellness, and interesting elements to our customers.
If you know your genetic information, you will be able to take precautionary
measures. You might have vulnerability to certain diseases, so you can get
checkups for that more often.
And, we provide the analysis of over 500
items to our customers. The number of items continues to grow as we continue to
What are your plans for the future?
Genoplan was established with the goal to
analyzes the most gene information in Asia and collect the most number of data
in Asia. Currently, Genoplan is based in Korea, Japan and Singapore, and it
will expand to Hong Kong next year. And, we are expanding our service to other
Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Direction sought by the company
The cost and time required to analyze genes
was reduced significantly by the advances in technology. With this, the era has
come for individuals to easily access their genetic information. However, most
research results and genetic analysis services are made in the US and Europe.
So even though Asia accounts for more than half of the world's population, most
of the genetic data is made up of mainly white people, European and American.
So, we would like to collect the most data in Asia, and based on the data,
Genoplan wants to be the company that can contribute to the precision medicine
by collecting the most data in Asia.
KHIDI's program that help the business to develop
Bio companies actually have a long research
period. And, working with researchers cost a considerable amount of money. We
were able to receive financial support from the program run by KHIDI. Thanks to
this, we were able to overcome the crisis in the early stage, and develop well
