In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Big Hit Entertainment held the first paid online live performance. Korea's leading K-Pop group BTS had a paid online live concert Bangbang Con on June 14. It was most viewed by the fans in the US, and the fans from all over the world watched the concert in their own spaces as well. The chat window next to the screen was run in four languages, and fans left messages of cheer like "I wanted to see you," "Purple he (I love you)," "Worldwide handsome (world's best-looking man)." Fans could even show how much they like the concert by clicking the official cheering stick "ARMY bomb" button that serves like the "like button" in the Instagram on the bottom of the chat window. Since BTS could not see the fans, they filmed themselves with their selfie sticks to make it look like they are looking at it directly. It could not fully reenact the presence of the fans, but it was a way of showing interaction.
BTS sang 12 songs including "Boyz with Fun" for 90 minutes on stage at the Paradise City Hotel in Incheon. The performance was optimized for online environment, maximizing the effect of concerts. To show "respect" to the song, the frizzling of old TV was reenacted. For the song "Boy With Luv," LED umbrella performance was presented with the wall shining colorfully by countless cheering sticks. For the song "Black Swan," green grass hangs on the sky to create a mysterious atmosphere, and for the song "Go Go," the stage decorated like Korean traditional palace was shown as media art.
The concert started with their highly energetic song "Dope," and BTS also showcased their sub-unit songs like "Jamais Vu," "Respect," and Friends" for the first time. The end of the concert was decorated with the members self-requesting for an encore on the fans' behalf and singing their all-time heartwarming song "Spring Day."
About not being able to physically interact with the fans for a long time, Leader RM commented, "It's too hard to not see you and hear from you. I am afraid that this may be the future of concerts."
However, thanking that BTS was able to hold the concert, Jimin said, "We missed you guys so much and I guess you guys missed us too. I hope you have a really great time." On the same note, J-Hope said, "I am happy to be on the stage and sweating."
June 13, the day before the performance,
was BTS's seventh year anniversary. The oldest member Jin said, "Yesterday
was the day of the end of the contract, but we met a great company and great
members, and we were able to work together longer."
