To generate hydrogen, compressed hydrogen or liquefied hydrogen method is used. This hydrogen is prone to explosion risks since it is stored in high pressure. 'Hugreen Power', which receives the support of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, has developed a technology to store hydrogen in a solid fuel state instead of in high pressure to eliminate this problem. Hugreen Power is commercializing a hydrogen generator that can operate safely for long hours. We have organized our questions on the company and product in Q&As through an interview with CEO Shin-wang Kang of Hugreen Power.

Q: Could you introduce about your company to us?
A: Hugreen Power is a company specialized in producing hydrogen generator that is small, light, has high energy density, and can be applied to various applications and 'hydrogen generator for fuel battery' that can operate for a long time at the same time. With a business goal to develop the smallest and lightest products with high density in the world, we have focused on commercializing hydrogen generator for fuel battery.
Q: What is the product/service/solution/technology you are introducing to us?
A: Hugreen Power's hydrogen generation is an innovative technology that is fundamentally different from compressed hydrogen, liquefied hydrogen, or other hydrogen generation methods that are well-known already. One unique aspect is that this technology extracts hydrogen without using catalyst; it can extract high purity hydrogen immediately by turning on switch whenever necessary while storing hydrogen in a solid fuel state. Since hydrogen is not stored in high pressure unlike the existing method, there is no explosion risk and anyone can use it easily and simply. It can also be used in all-weather in high temperature or low temperature since it is stored in a solid fuel state.
Q: How is it differentiated from other company products?
A: Hugreen Power's hydrogen generator uses a disposable fuel cartridge, so anyone can easily and simply replace the fuel cartridge like a printer cartridge once all fuel is consumed. Thus, unlike other products using catalyst, it can re-operate immediately without a service element to replace the catalyst all the time.
In addition, since all devices are made in a compact all-in-one form, the hydrogen generator can be used for various purposes in different areas and can be used as portable power generator, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or the power source of robot. It can be used widely in areas that were difficult to be applied due to short battery durability, short operating time, or restrictions by the surrounding environment.
Hugreen Power also owns an integrated technology of hydrogen generator and fuel battery, which can be combined with any fuel battery. It is expected to contribute greatly to the commercialization of kinds of power generator or power pack.
Q: What are the specific achievements you've made so far?
A: Recognized for its advanced technology and product completion, Hugreen Power has performed many large-scale projects so far. It exported fuel battery-driven power generator of 200W-level for the supplementary power of battery pack vehicle as part of NATO military relief in March 2014 and has been exporting high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with 1kW-level hydrogen generator for military by winning a project order from Boeing in the U.S. in September 2014. In 2017, it performed a national smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) project with the Korea Institute of Energy Research, and has been working on 'Next Generation Power Technology for Muscular Power Increase', a defense project for the Korean military since it won the order in December 2017.
Q: Finally, what is the ultimate vision/goal pursued by your company?
A: Hugreen Power will continuously conduct R&D and strive its best to commercialize hydrogen generator for fuel battery.
The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology was established to nurture talented human resources of advanced science and technology, promote collaborative researches with industries and education/research with foreign countries, and contribute to national science technologies and balanced regional development. The institute is carrying out plans such as building a global campus equipped with global competitiveness through the 'Cradle of creative science and technology for the future', proposing an innovative research model through collaborative global convergence research and convergence across academic disciplines, and nurturing human resources for youth startups for generating national growth engine.
