Recently, the need for bio-energy as a solution for global climate change has been brought to the fore. In response to these trends, 'Light Econergy' has launched 'Zero Tan', which are eco-friendly briquettes made of chaff and coir fiber instead of coal, to reduce greenhouse gases. Currently Light Econergy, which is receiving support from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, is actively looking for investors and dealers to accompany the product launch. Questions about the company and its product were organized in a Q&A fashion through an interview with the CEO of Light Econergy, Ma Joohyeon.
Q: How would you introduce your company?
A: Light Econergy is a company that makes cooking and heating fuels out of recycled agricultural by-products. Currently I run the company alone, and have experience working at LS Cable & System for 10 years in the purchasing team, domestic business team, and overseas business team, building up skills in global negotiation, communication, and marketing.
Q: What is the product/ service/ solution/ technology you are trying to introduce?
A: The product I am trying to introduce is a briquette made of chaff, coir fiber, and fallen tree branches, instead of coal. As a result, it is more eco-friendly in a sense. Ash blows away after burning fuel, but one of the characteristics of our product is the addition of ingredients similar to dirt to prevent ash from being blown around. In this way, carbon dioxide or fine dust can be reduced.

Q: What sets your company apart from other companies?
A: Similar products overseas are made from collected small pieces of by-products and combined with mud to create fuel, but they have inconsistent quality and reduced heat output. However, our company's product matches existing products in the market in heat and is improved in its environmental aspect.
Q: What are some specific achievements your company has had so far?
A: We have registered patents in Korea and China. Charcoal is similar in weight with coal, but has a big volume. To form the product, a hydraulic press of high pressure must be used, but there were no products that were made this way. Our company was able to receive government support and developed hydraulic press forming equipment for a year.
Q: Are there any partnership or investment issues in discussion?
A: We have experience attracting around 500 million KRW from individuals, and using this as a base, when we launch in the latter half of the year, we plan to actively attract investment and look for dealers.

Q: What are your future plans?
A: By June this first half of the year, we plan to finish developing our product, and go into designing equipment for mass production based on the data. Additionally, in the second half of the year, we plan to acquire funds to prepare for mass production, through crowd funding, or through existing dealers and shareholders. We plan to release the product on 4/4 quarters.
Q: Finally, what is the vision/ goal of the company?
A: We are pushing for business in using waste resources to replace existing coal. Ultimately, we hope to lead the way in solving the problem of climate change with not just briquettes, but other eco-friendly products.
