Mr. Achim Steiner, former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Secretary-General of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), delivered the keynote speech on March 30th, 2017 at Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition(2017 MIECF) and delivered the keynote address concerning "Innovative Green Development for a Sustainable Future"
Each annual edition of the Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (MIECF) invites a renowned expert to deliver a keynote speech. This year of 2017MIECF keynote speaker is Mr. Achim Steiner, former Secretary-General of the United Nations and Secretary-General of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) from 2006 to 2016.
During his tenure at the United Nations, he addressed UN environmental issues such as climate change, technology innovation, ecosystem management and the role of markets and the private sector in sustainable development. He also established the new UN Environment Conference in 2014 to foster more effective global environmental cooperation and governance. He led the UNEP through major reforms and changes at the United Nations General Assembly. During his time as the UNEP Director, he pioneered new key initiatives linking economic and environmental shifts to green economy, finance, and energy and resource management.
Themed "Innovative Green Development for a Sustainable Future", Mr Steiner's speech was analyzed global environmental challenges and their impact on economic activity and the main pressures on sustainability. He focused in particular on issues related to climate change, as well as goals for sustainable development and for better use of natural resources. He also discussed concepts of green economy, the circular economy and ecological civilization.
He brought up the opinion on the role that public policy has in promoting a green economy, and public policy's likely impacts on future businesses, industries and markets (including technological innovations). Four cases were analysed by Mr Steiner, covering the following sectors: low-carbon and renewable energy; electric vehicles; low-carbon and sustainable agriculture; and green finance.
Meanwhile, the annual MIECF is an international exhibition designed to increase the impact of environmental projects within the global market of the China's Pan-Pearl River Delta Region in Southern Mainland China and the international markets. It is a key influential and international event hosted by the Macao Investment Promotion Bureau and the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region. The 2017 MIECF is being held under the theme "Innovative Green Development for Sustainable Future"
