Optare is the leading manufacturer of full size battery-powered buses in the UK. Electric buses are now beginning to make a significant mark on the public transport scene and as their use grows they will make a major contribution to cleaner and more sustainable public transport in the future. Electric buses help to reduce overall pollution levels, particularly in congested city centres where air pollution has been directly related to severe health problems.
Optare electric buses are equipped with fast charging technology which extends daily range. Optare electric buses use Circontrol CHAdeMO DC fast charging stations which can charge the 80 kWh batteries to full capacity in around two hours compared to the standard six to eight hours from a normal charge. This offers the ability to recharge the batteries during the day as well as overnight, which provides the potential to double the daily range of the buses to 300 km.
With the fast charger a bus can be easily charged during a lunchtime layover or at other quiet periods in its schedule. Operating costs of electric buses are exceptionally low too when compared with an equivalent diesel powered bus. A full charge of the 80 kWh battery costs around $20 at peak rates. Maintenance free batteries also reduce the servicing time and costs associated with the vehicle over its lifetime.
A cost benefit analysis of Perth's Central Area Transit system showed net financial savings of six million dollars if the CAT fleet was converted to electric buses. These savings are net of all procurement, operating, R&M and charging infrastructure costs. Other benefits of converting the CAT fleet to electric buses include:
- The removal of 20,000,000 kg of CO2 and associated toxic emissions from the metropolitan area.
- The elimination of the need for 22,000,000 litres of fuel and transport distribution costs of this fuel.
- The elimination of 237,000,000 dB of noise from the CBD areas.

Extended Range
Opportunity charging can be undertaken through the day allowing range to be extended to make the EV viable across a wide variety of public transport operations. Dual fast charging allows vehicles to be fully charged in approximately 60 minutes.
Energy saving technology
Regenerative braking means that most of the energy which would otherwise have been lost when the vehicle is decelerating is sent back to the batteries that power the vehicle.
Our EcoDrive management system allows driving styles to be monitored, providing drivers with the information they need to achieve optimum efficiency in service.
